WACSOF URGES ECOWAS TO PEG MARRIAGE MINIMUM AGE FOR FEMALE MARRIAGE
The West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF) has called on the ECOWAS parliament to support legislation on the minimum age a female child can be given out in marriage in the sub-region.
Acting Secretary General of the organization, Mr Auwal Musa Rafsanjani made the call yesterday when he led a delegation on a visit to the ECOWAS parliament in Abuja.
He said early marriage is a serious issue with negative consequences especially on young girls who are denied access to education and source of survival.
He said stipulating a minimum age limit in which children should be given out for marriage would help children to go to school at least up to primary and secondary school levels and save millions of girls from ignorance.
He said marriage is about giving consent and a child of 10 to 12 years for instance does not know what marriage is about.
Rafsanjani said the support of the
ECOWAS parliament is key in galvanizing the advocacy so that policy makers will think of the consequences.
Responding, Secretary General of ECOWAS parliament Dr Cheick Abdelkader Dansoko promised to bring the matter as an urgent one before the parliament so that statements and debates can be made on the floor of the house and employ appropriate mechanism to save the girl-child.
He said there was need to protect the girl-child and look into the provisions in the constitution of member states on the right of the child to free and basic education.
