Algeria 1 Vs 1 Nigeria: Super Eagles’ player's ratings

Super Eagles

A review of how Super Eagles players fared in the 1-1 draw away at Algeria.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria put in their shift to get a 1-1 draw against Algeria in Constantine to round up their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

John Ogu put the Super Eagles in the lead midway in the second half before Yacine Brahimi equalised from the spot for Algeria.

This is how Super Eagles players’ fared in the game.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Goalkeeper)

Starting in his fourth consecutive game for the Super Eagles Ezenwa’s performance highlighted why Gernot Rohr continues to search for reliable hands ahead of the World Cup. Ezenwa was jittery all through the game and struggled to cope with set pieces. He nearly gifted Algerians a goal when he spilled a cross during the game.

4/10

Shehu Abdullahi (Right-back)

Another solid performance from Abdullahi, a natural midfielder who is now making the Super Eagles right-back position his own. He did well to mark Porto midfielder and Algerian captain Brahimi. His lack of forward runs and the late controversial penalty he conceded could not negate all the good he did on the evening.

7/10

Leon Balogun (central defence)

Captain of the day Balogun could not cope with the pace of the game most times but had some solid tackles.

5/10

William Troost-Ekong (Central defence)

Performed better than his older defensive partner Balogun and was able to keep up with the pace of the game. Played well from the back also with some good passes.

6/10

Ola Aina (Left-back)

Played out of position, the young defender who made his first Super Eagles start was impressive and kept Riyad Mahrez quiet. He also ventured forward well a couple of times.

6/10

John Ogu (Defensive midfield)

Man of the Match, Ogu was a class ahead of everyone in midfield in the game. His innate composure, fine passes and tackles put him in charge of the midfield. He capped his performance with a fantastic goal.

8/10

Wilfred Ndidi (Defensive midfield)

Combined well with Ogu to shield Super Eagles defence and control proceedings from the midfield. Did his job again.

7/10

Oghenekaro Etebo (Midfield)

Recovered from a poor first half to redeem himself with some energetic display and tackles. Could not create any chances for the forwards and was not a good support for the striker.

5/10

Kelechi Iheanacho (Forward)

Started from the right-hand side where he impressed with his passing and defending but the Leicester City striker’s lack of pace made him very inconspicuous for most of the game.

5/10

Alex Iwobi (Forward)

Also struggled as he couldn't cope with the physicality of the game. He also looked unsure of his role in the team.

4/10

Anthony Nwakaeme (Striker)

Worked hard on his Super Eagles debut but was very isolated up front. He could not create space for himself and it was obvious he has not adapted to the team.

4/10

Substitutes

Henry Onyekuru (Forward)

Impressed in his first competitive game for the Super Eagles and almost scored when he came on for Nwakaeme.

Showed off the dribbling skills which he is known for but his curling effort afterwards was deflected for a corner.
